Increasing efficiency with the work triangle:

The most efficient arrangement is a "work triangle" with its points at the kitchen's three main work areas:

  • food storage space
  • food preparation / cooking area
  • clean-up center

Keeping your work triangle to a manageable size of 25 feet or less will allow you to create a comfortable and efficient workspace.

  • Allow 12" to 15" counter space on either side of your range.
  • Allow 24" to 36" counter space on either side of the sink
  • Leave a 48" walkway around all sides of a center island

Try to rout traffic aroundor away from work areas to avoid congestion. Keep in mind that it's also possible to add space from an adjacent area like a dining room or closet.
