FORMICA CHEMTOP
CHEMICAL RESISTANT LAMINATE
Q. What is the difference between Formica Chemtop chemical resistant laminate and standard High Pressure Laminate (HPL)?

A. Formica Chemtop is much more resistant to a wide variety of harsh chemicals that might damage an ordinary melamine surface. Chemical resistance is achieved through the use of Formica's Chematte (-29) intergral coating process. This finish has a slightly different appearance from our standard matte (-58) finish.

Q. Is there any difference in color between Formica Chemtop and the corresponding standard HPL?

A. Yes. Formica Chemtop incorporates a special integral coating which gives the product its chemical resistant properties and a slightly different hue than its corresponding standard HPL item. Review actual Formica Chemtop samples before specifying. "Butt" matches between Formica Chemtop and standard HPL are not recommended, while horizontal/vertical matches are acceptable.

Q. What are typical applications for Formica Chemtop?

A. Typical applications for Formica Chemtop include horizontal or vertical surfaces in lab benches, tabletops and other work surfaces in chemical, medical, scientific, pathogenic laboratories, mortuaries, nursing stations and other institutional uses, as well as commercial or light duty manufacturing operations.

Q. Is Formica Chemtop available in all colors?

A. Formica Chemtop is available in 20 colors and patterns. Other standard Formica brand laminate colors can be factory ordered.

Q. What is the size availability for Formica Chemtop?

A. Formica Chemtop is available in the following sizes: Widths: 30"*, 48", 60" (76.2cm*, 121.9cm, 152.4cm) Lengths: 96", 120", 144" (243.8cm, 304.8cm, 3658cm) *30" (76.2cm) material must be ordered in increments of two sheets.

Q. Can Formica Chemtop be fabricated with normal woodworking tools and techniques?

A. yes. Formica Chemtop can be fabricated using standard HPL tools and techniques. The peelcoat should be left in place as long as possible during the fabrication process. Formica Chemtop has a special chemical resistant surface. Use of sharp carbide-tipped blades is recommended to minimize chipping.

Q. What are the appropriate substrates for Formica Chemtop?

A. Medium Density Fiberboard, 45# density industrial particleboard or cabinet grade plywood are recommended for use with Formica Chemtop laminate.

Q. Is Formica Chemtop postformable?

A. Yes, Formica Chemtop is postformable. The minimum outside radius is 1/2" (12.7mm) with an ideal forming temperature of 288 degrees F (142 degrees C). The minimum inside cove radius is 3/16" (4.8mm). Slight color change in the cove is normal. The peelcoat must be removed from the heated area before forming or coving. A lower cove bar temperature of 325-330 degrees F (163-166 degrees C) is recommended. Postforming provides a practical edge with excellent protection against chemicals attacking a fabricated seam.

Q. What fire rating can be achieved using Formica Chemtop?

A. A Class III fire rating can be achieved by using Formica Chemtop, Formica brand #150 adhesive, 3/4" (19.1mm) standard particleboard and 91/BLS backer.

Q. What adhesives can be used with Formica Chemtop?

A. A wide variety of adhesives may be used to adhere Formica Chemtop to recommended substrates, including contact PVAc (white glue), urea and resorcinol adhesives.

Q. How should a Formica Chemtop surface be cleaned?

A. Formica Chemtop should be cleaned with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Good laboratory practice dictates that all chemical spills should be wiped up promptly. Use of abrasive cleaners, powders, scouring pads, steel wool, sandpaper, etc., will damage the finish and permanently reduce the stain and chemical resistance of the laminate. Stubborn stains may be removed by the use of an organic solvent or hypochlorite bleach, followed by wiping with a soft, damp cloth.

Q. Does Formica Chemtop come with a warranty?

A. Yes. Formica Chemtop comes with a one-year warranty. Please request a Formica Chemtop Technical Data sheet or Formica Chemtop brochure for warranty terms and conditions.
